The Ocean County Library connects people, builds community and transforms lives every day through the power of information and stories. The Library is a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. Our programs, services, and collection aim to meet the needs of our diverse community throughout the year but special holidays and observances provide us an opportunity to focus our efforts on celebrating, uplifting, and honoring specific communities.

History

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is celebrated every June across the United States. June was chosen to honor the Stonewall Uprising, which occurred in Manhattan in 1969 and is regarded as a mark of the beginning of the Gay Liberation Movement in the US. The various events that occur during Pride Month, most notably Pride Parades, serve as a celebration and recognition of the impact LGBTQ individuals have had across the globe and the importance of their journey toward equality in the US.
